Tips For Making Great Fabric Church Banners

By Coleen Cote

Many churches make use of fabric church banners to convey a variety of messages to their congregation. Some are used to display the church logo and name or perhaps the service times. Others are used to convey scripture verses or religious principles. The choice of banner often depends on the occasion, sermon them or religious ceremony taking place. There may also be different banners displayed inside and outside the church.

Before one can make a banner, one needs to decide whether the banner will be for use outdoors or indoors, as this will affect the size, design and the choice of materials that are used. Outside banners must be bigger and stronger so that they are clearly visible and will not be easily damaged.

Another important thing to think about is the purpose of the banner. One must decide whether it is purely informative or whether it is a special themed banner for a particular religious holiday. It may also be a verse or passage that could be used on most days.

There are many different materials that can be used. Fabrics such as cotton are great for the basis of a banner, while lettering and images can be cut for velvet, or more commonly, felt. Many people add additional decorations like rope or plastic gemstones. Fabric paint is also a good alternative to using different color fabrics for the images or letters.

Once the overall size has been decided, it is a good idea to cut the material a little bigger than the final size to allow for a hem. Also, remember to create a channel at the top as well so that a dowel stick can be slid in for hanging.

The design should then be carefully be planned out. Visual consistency and flow are important here, as is balance. Although the writing and image should be bold and big enough to see clearly from far away, having a lot of open space in between often creates a bigger impact. Simplicity works well because the overall look is not distracting or cluttered.

The final design can be resized using a graphic design computer program. The full size can then be printed out onto paper, usually by a professional, to use as a template. Cut out the paper shapes and then use those to trace the design onto the colored bits of material that you have chosen. Be sure that the colors used match the overall feeling of the message being conveyed, and that there is a general color scheme throughout.

Once all of your cut outs are done, it is a good idea to lay the banner out and place all of the elements where you imagine them to go to get a feel for what the final design will look like. Once you are happy with the position of all the elements, attach the fabric pieces. The easiest method is usually with fabric glue, although sewing is also an option.

Once all of the pieces have been carefully glued in place, allow the banner to dry completely before moving or hanging. It is usually best to let it dry overnight. Using this method one can make many different and beautiful fabric church banners.
